On the grounds of the school, are some historic buildings that have been moved there and preserved. There is also a log house that was on the Bell family farm is is believed to have been the home of one of John Bell’s sons.
Adams Station Bar-B-Que is open for breakfast, lunch and supper. Located on Hwy 41 in the old Adams Gas Station building, The gang at Adams Station has been cooking up good food since 2011. Yum.
Adams is most famous for the Bell Witch, a spirit that haunted the John Bell family in the early 1800s, culminating with the death of John Bell in 1817. John’s death is the only recorded death in American history that is officially attributed to a supernatural being. After his death, the spirit, that came to be known as Kate, left the family alone.
The story is retold every fall with the play, Spirit, that is staged on the grounds behind the Bell School. It was written by David Alford and is produced by the group, Community Spirit, Inc. Local actors, as well as professionals, are cast in this outdoor drama that tells the story of the Bell family and how they were tormented by the spirit. The production has been fortunate to have direct descendants of John Bell be a part of the production on stage and behind the scenes. The performances are always the last 2 weekends in October and tickets are available at Shade Tree.
Spirit is one component of the Bell Witch Fall Festival held in October. It kicks off with the Red River Boys returning for concerts on October 11 and 12. Shade Tree will host A Day at the Farm on October 19 and Spirit will be performed the last 2 weekends of October.
Adams is also home to the Threshermans Show in July.
You can also take a canoe trip down the Red River and visit the historic Bell Witch Cave.
